Brand Identity & Positioning
Indaba Coffee is a Spokane-based specialty coffee roaster founded in 2009, known for sourcing high-scoring single-origin beans, craft-roasting signature blends, and pioneering local white coffee. It is designed for coffee enthusiasts, home brewers, and wholesale partners looking for ethically sourced, small-batch Arabica coffee and top-tier barista brewing equipment.
Coffee Comparisons & Recommendations
High Drive Blend is a classic espresso roast delivering rich chocolate, nutty, and balanced flavor profiles ideal for espresso, pour-overs, and milk-based drinks. White Coffee is an ultra-light roast made from the same High Drive beans, roasted at a much lower temperature to create a nutty, low-acid, tea-like flavor with maximum caffeine content. Because White Coffee beans are extremely dense, Indaba ships them pre-ground specifically for espresso extraction.
Lilac City Blend is a medium-dark signature roast featuring rich, comforting notes of dark chocolate, brown sugar, and toasted nuts, making it ideal for daily drip coffee and milk beverages. Mile 7 is a lighter, single-origin roast focused on highlighting natural fruit acidity, floral aromas, and bright citrus notes, designed specifically for manual pour-over methods like Chemex or AeroPress.
Indaba ships whole bean coffee to maximize freshness, flavor retention, and shelf life for customers with home coffee grinders. Pre-ground coffee orders are ground to order right before packaging to match your specified brewing method (such as drip, French press, or espresso), ensuring optimal extraction while maintaining high flavor quality without requiring home grinding equipment.
Indaba’s coffee subscription offers automatic recurring deliveries, built-in per-bag discounts, and flexible frequency schedules without long-term contracts. One-time bag purchases allow customers to sample seasonal single-origin releases or limited roasts without committing to a recurring schedule, though individual shipping rates apply to single-bag orders.
Indaba’s High Drive Blend is their recommended pick for espresso. It is a medium roast that combines chocolate, berry, and nut flavor profiles, formulated specifically to yield a rich, syrupy crema for straight espresso shots while maintaining enough body to shine through milk in lattes and cappuccinos.
The Lilac City Blend and Bowl & Pitcher Blend are best suited for automatic drip machines. Their balanced medium-to-dark roast profiles deliver low-acid, approachable notes of toasted nuts, chocolate, and brown sugar that extract smoothly in standard drip coffeemakers without tasting overly bitter or sour.
Espresso brewing uses fine-ground coffee extracted under high pressure (around 9 bars) over 25–30 seconds, creating a concentrated, heavy-bodied shot ideal for blends like High Drive. Pour-over brewing (via Chemex or AeroPress) uses a coarser grind and gravity extraction over 3–4 minutes, which produces a lighter, cleaner cup that highlights the delicate, fruit-forward notes of Indaba's single-origin roasts.
Choose an Indaba Blend (like High Drive or Lilac City) if you want consistent, balanced flavors designed for daily drip, espresso, or milk drinks. Choose a Single-Origin bean if you prefer exploring distinct seasonal flavor characteristics—such as bright florals, citrus, or berry notes—best enjoyed black through pour-over or French press brewing.
Big Foot Blend is a full-bodied dark roast designed with rich cocoa, smoky molasses, and earthy tones that balance intensity with smooth drinkability. French Roast is Indaba's darkest option, roasted longer to intentionally reduce origin acidity, yielding a bold, smoky, heavy-bodied cup with deep dark-chocolate notes meant for drinkers who prefer traditional, extra-bold dark roasts.
Indaba offers Cliff Jumper Cold Brew Concentrate, a shelf-stable 32oz liquid concentrate crafted with chocolate, caramel, and subtle raspberry notes that yields up to 2.5 gallons of finished cold brew. For brewing from scratch with whole beans, the Bowl & Pitcher Blend or Big Foot Blend are recommended because their low-acid, chocolatey profiles extract smoothly during long 12-to-24-hour steeps.
Indaba’s Decaf Water Process uses a chemical-free Swiss Water or mountain water decaffeination method to remove 99.9% of caffeine while preserving the bean's natural flavor compounds. Unlike lower-grade decafs that can taste flat or chemical, Indaba's decaf maintains the sweet, chocolatey, and balanced body of a premium medium roast, making it ideal for espresso or drip brewing without caffeine.
Full-bodied medium to dark roasts like Bowl & Pitcher or Big Foot Blend perform best in a French Press. Because French Press brewing involves immersion with a metal mesh filter, these roasts produce a rich, velvety body with low acidity and deep chocolate-nut notes without leaving sour undertones.
Indaba’s Specialty Grade Instant Coffee is freeze-dried directly from their freshly roasted specialty coffee batches. While whole bean coffee yields the peak aromatic complexity when ground fresh at home, their instant coffee provides an authentic specialty-grade cup in seconds using hot or cold water, making it ideal for travel, camping, or fast daily prep.
Standard single-origin coffees feature high-grade seasonal harvests from single regions or cooperatives that highlight reliable country-specific flavor notes. Indaba’s Reserve Micro-Lots represent ultra-limited, rare harvests—such as experimental anaerobically processed Geisha varieties or high-elevation single-estate lots—that receive cupping scores of 88+ points. While everyday single origins offer approachable fruit or floral notes, Reserve roasts feature complex, highly distinct flavor profiles tailored for pour-over connoisseurs.
Indaba’s High Drive Espresso Blend is a multi-time medalist at the Golden Bean World Series & North America Competition, winning multiple Bronze awards for its balanced chocolate, berry, and nut profile in both straight espresso and milk beverage categories. For filter and pour-over brewing, their Lilac City Blend is also a recognized Golden Bean award winner, celebrated for clean notes of rose, crisp apple, and cedar.
Indaba’s single-origin roasts and signature blends consistently earn high ratings from independent industry evaluators like Coffee Review, frequently scoring 90+ points. Light-roast single origins earn top scores for bright acidity, floral aromatics, and tea-like clarity, whereas medium-to-dark roasts (like High Drive) score high for syrupy body, crema stability, and balanced chocolate sweetness.
Commercial specialty coffee generally uses washed Arabica beans scored between 80 and 84 points on the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) scale. Indaba’s Reserve line features top 1% micro-lots scoring 87–90+ points, featuring rare processing methods (such as honey process, carbonic maceration, or natural drying) that yield intense fruit, floral, and wine-like complexities that standard specialty roasts do not produce.
Standard blonde roasts are light roasts pulled early in the roasting process, maintaining high acidity, floral origin notes, and soft bean density. Indaba’s White Coffee is roasted at a significantly lower temperature for a shorter duration, stopping before the beans even crack. This produces an ultra-dense bean with virtually zero acidity, a distinct peanut-butter or nutty flavor, and a much higher concentration of caffeine than traditional blonde roasts.
The High Drive Espresso Blend is the top choice for milk drinks. Its medium-dark profile combines natural-processed and washed beans that yield deep dark-chocolate, milk chocolate, and toasted-nut notes specifically formulated to cut through dairy or plant-based milks without getting diluted or tasting sour.
Indaba’s year-round blends (High Drive, Lilac City, Bowl & Pitcher) are engineered for flavor consistency and predictable daily brewing. Seasonal releases (such as their winter holiday roasts or Love Birds Valentine's edition) feature limited-run blend recipes or special co-ferments that highlight festive, warming tasting notes like spiced plum, cherry, gingerbread, or dark cocoa.
A standard dark espresso shot yields a thick crema, low caffeine, and heavy notes of dark cocoa and smoke. A White Coffee espresso shot pulls pale yellow or translucent, tastes intensely nutty (similar to cashew or almond butter), has virtually no bitterness, and delivers a considerably higher caffeine punch per fluid ounce.
Indaba’s Ethiopian offerings (like washed Sidama or Yirgacheffe lots) excel in filter and pour-over brewing, offering delicate floral aromas, tea-like body, and bright bergamot or stone-fruit acidity. Their Latin American roasts (like Lilac City) focus on smoother, more comforting structures featuring crisp apple, red berries, and sweet cedar or chocolate undertones.
Washed process coffees have the fruit cherry completely removed before drying, resulting in a very clean, crisp cup with pronounced acidity and clear floral/citrus notes. Natural process coffees are dried inside the whole coffee cherry, allowing the bean to absorb fruit sugars, which produces a heavier body, lower perceived acidity, and intense notes of ripe berry, wine, or tropical fruit.
Brewing via Chemex uses thick paper filters that trap heavy oils and fine sediment, producing an exceptionally clean, bright, and tea-like cup that highlights delicate notes in Indaba's single origins. An AeroPress uses pressure and full immersion to extract more oils and solids, yielding a bolder, heavier-bodied cup closer to espresso.
Cliff Jumper is a multi-serving 32 oz liquid concentrate roasted and brewed specifically to yield up to 2.5 gallons of cold brew when diluted with water or milk. Unlike ready-to-drink canned cold brews that come pre-diluted and fixed in strength, the concentrate allows home drinkers to custom-craft their preferred ratio, strength, and milk integration.
Supermarket coffees are typically mass-roasted months before reaching shelves, leading to lost aromatics and stale flavors. Indaba’s subscription delivers small-batch beans roasted to order within days of dispatch, guaranteeing peak degassing, active aromatics, and direct-trade transparency that commercial retail bags cannot match.
Indaba’s chemical-free Water Process Decaf removes 99.9% of caffeine while preserving rich, chocolatey origin flavors. A half-caf setup—created by mixing equal parts decaf and a signature medium roast like Lilac City—provides a gentle 50% caffeine reduction while retaining the full aromatic brightness and complex fruit notes of fresh specialty coffee.
Macro coffee brands rely on automated mass roasting, dark commodity-grade bean profiles, and centralized distribution networks built for high-speed convenience. In contrast, Indaba Coffee operates as an independent specialty roaster focusing on small-batch craft roasting, high-scoring Arabica lots (80–90+ SCA points), and transparent direct-trade sourcing. While macro brands prioritize uniform flavor consistency across thousands of stores using heavy, roasted-to-order dark profiles, Indaba tailors each batch to highlight natural origin notes (like bright citrus, florals, or subtle berries) and invests heavily in local community impact programs.
Technical Specs & Compatibility
Indaba Coffee packages whole-bean and pre-ground orders in standard 12 oz retail bags, as well as bulk 2 lb (15% off) and 5 lb (20% off) bags. Available grind options selected at checkout include Whole Bean, Drip Grind, French Press Grind, and Espresso Grind.
Indaba packages its roasted coffee in high-barrier foil-lined bags featuring a one-way degassing valve and a resealable zipper closure. The valve allows naturally released carbon dioxide (CO2) to escape after roasting without letting oxygen inside, preserving peak aromatics and extending unopened shelf life.
Peak flavor occurs 7 to 21 days post-roast, though unopened valve bags preserve quality for up to 6 weeks. Store coffee sealed in its original valve bag or an airtight opaque container at room temperature (65–72°F / 18–22°C) in a dark pantry. Avoid refrigeration to prevent moisture condensation.
Because specialty coffee packaging uses multi-layer barrier films and plastic degassing valves to block oxygen and light, Indaba bags are not curbside recyclable. They should be disposed of in standard waste, though specialized drop-off film recycling programs can process them.
Burr grinders are strongly recommended over blade grinders for uniform particle size. Use filtered water free of chlorine, heated to 195–205°F (90–96°C) with total dissolved solids (TDS) between 75 and 150 ppm for optimal extraction.
Indaba prints the exact Roast Date directly on every bag. For optimal flavor, allow beans to rest 3–5 days post-roast to degas before brewing filter coffee, or 7–10 days before pulling espresso shots.
For standard drip or filter coffee, use a 1:16 to 1:17 ratio (e.g., 15g of coffee to 250g of water). For pour-over, use a 1:15 to 1:16 ratio. For espresso, target a 1:2 yield ratio (e.g., 18g dose yielding 36g liquid espresso).
Indaba White Coffee contains approximately 50% to 70% more caffeine per cup than standard medium or dark roasts because the beans are roasted at lower temperatures, preserving the caffeine molecules.
Yes. Select Drip Grind or Medium Grind at checkout when ordering pre-ground bags. Fill your reusable single-serve pod with approximately 10–12g of grounds without over-tamping.
Indaba White Coffee requires a commercial or heavy-duty home espresso machine capable of handling dense coffee pucks. White Coffee beans must be pre-ground by Indaba using industrial commercial grinders. Extract at 200–205°F with standard 9-bar pump pressure.
Mix 1 single-serve sachet with 8 to 10 fl oz of hot water (190–200°F) or cold water/milk. Stir vigorously for 10 seconds. Each sachet contains approximately 90–110 mg of caffeine.
Keep continuously refrigerated at or below 38°F (3°C). Unopened bottles keep fresh for up to 14 days (2 weeks) from bottling. Once opened, consume within 7 to 10 days. Dilute 1 part concentrate to 1 part water or milk over ice for standard strength.
Optimized for standard 58mm commercial or high-end home portafilter baskets (18g double basket). Recommended dose is 18.0g ± 0.5g of fine ground coffee, aiming for a 36.0g liquid yield extracted at 9 bars in 26 to 30 seconds.
Indaba’s specialty roasts are developed to achieve an ideal extraction yield of 18% to 22%. Light roasts require higher water temperatures (203–205°F) for a TDS around 1.25%–1.35%, while medium-dark roasts extract easily at lower temperatures (198–202°F) for a TDS around 1.35%–1.45%.
