The Heritage & Tradition of Sumatran Coffee
Coffee cultivation in the Indonesian archipelago dates back to the mid-18th century. Today, Northern Sumatra is famous for producing some of the most distinctive, syrupy-bodied coffees in the world. The Mandheling designation traces its heritage to the traditional growing areas of the Tapanuli region and the Batak highlands near Lake Toba.
The defining hallmark of Sumatran coffee is its traditional Giling Basah (wet-hulling) process. Farmers pulp the fresh cherry and hull the parchment while the bean is still soft and moist before patio-drying. This unique processing method yields a deep, rustic sweetness, heavy body, and gentle acidity that cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth.
